Mrs. Shonkwiler

I am a young teacher, only 30+ years of teaching!  I have six children and six, and nine grandchildren.  They, of course, are the cutest grandchildren in the world and almost as wonderful as the kids in my classes every year.  Each year my husband says, "Are these the best kids you have ever had?"  I say, "yes!"

I like to do many things.  First and foremost I love to teach.  I have been lucky because at a very young age I dreamt that I would teach.  Teaching has introduced me to some very talented children and incredible teaching partners, like all the wonderful teachers at Bridger.  Next, I love to exercise.  Each day I do core exercises and then swim, walk or work with weights.  Exercising makes me feel good.  Also, I love to garden.  When I garden I feel the fresh air and I don't even realize how many hours that I have been gardening.  It is like I am having a conversation with the plants.  Growing my own food also makes my body feel good.  I like to know that I am eating good organic food grown with a lot of love.  Finally, I want to be a good steward to our earth, so I bring my basket with me and my bags made of cloth so I don't have to use plastic bags.  I think all this plastic is not good for our planet, so I want to try to reduce the amount of plastic being used.  Again, being a teacher is a gift and I thank all my students for helping me learn how to help them learn too!

Mrs. Roden (Mrs. R.)

I am such a lucky student teacher! Some of you may remember me from the fall when I got to spend my time volunteering at Bridger to get to know your wonderful students! I am now back and student teaching full time with Mrs. Shonkwiler for the rest of the 2015 school year! I am thrilled to work alongside Mrs. Shonkwiler and share her wonderful classroom of students. It has been so exciting getting reacquainted with the kids in room 21 and I can't wait to share the rest of the school year with them.

I like to keep busy and love doing many things, but most of all teaching! I do enjoy staying active with yoga and biking. I pass my free time in my garden and try to spend as much time as possible with my lovely cat Luna and amazing husband Kyle.

I earned my undergraduate degree in Spanish from the University of Oregon and then spent a year living in South Korea as an English teacher. I am currently finishing up my Master of Arts in Teaching degree at Concordia University. I am bringing all of my experiences with me to room 21 and have even started incorporating Spanish into our everyday activities! In class right now, we are moving into an engaging hands-on habitats unit and will begin working more in our classroom's garden as the weather continues to improve.

The way I see things, the only moment you can do anything is the one in which you're living. I try to bring this idea to the classroom and it really helps me to focus on what is important. So, I try to be present, embrace each breath, and laugh as much as possible.
