YOGA IN THE CLASSROOM

Yoga is part of a daily practice in our room. We use the practice of movement and breath to teach students how to self-regulate, boost brain power, and enhance reading, writing, math and science concepts. This site was inspired by Yoga Calm training. I highly recommend the training for teachers. http://www.yogacalm.org

I play the good behavior game(PAX) during our yoga sessions. Below is more information about PAX.

The room is cleared from extra furniture. Each child has their name on a piece of tape on the floor for quick movement activities/ and yoga mats for the longer yoga session. This helps to define personal space and eliminate wasted time. When we are not doing movement/yoga, students use this space for other curriculum activities.

We gather at the rug each morning to have the helpers of the day guide our deep belly breaths. We learn a variety of breathing techniques and the yoga board is always visible, displaying the different poses/activities. Also, the rug is the place where poses are first demonstrated. Then, practice is at his/her personal taped place and further practiced with the mats during the longer yoga session in the afternoon.

              Breathing and Bones Yoga

Students learn the Bones and Muscle Songs to know what muscles to activate and relax during the yoga poses.
